Securing the Ground at a Construction Site – Why It’s So Important?

Stabilizing the ground that forms part of a construction site is essentially the first step that should be taken before starting the actual construction work. Why is it so important? What benefits come from access to a hard, stable surface?

Safety on the construction site — why ground protection is important

A construction site is a place where safety is crucial. Heavy vehicles, workers, and construction materials are moved and stored within its boundaries. This means following the proper rules and standards that define:

  • how to move around the site,
  • proper logistics procedures,
  • methods for storing and securing the cargo.

The key to protecting the ground on a construction site is its temporary stabilization, as well as protection against trenches collapsing. This helps minimize the risk of an accident, loss of construction materials, or other logistics-related issues. 

How to ensure safety on the construction site? Where to start?

Ground protection on a construction site has a twofold purpose. By this term, we mean:

  • soil stabilization that allows heavy vehicles to move across it,
  • fencing off the construction site area, which protects it from theft of construction materials.

When it comes to fencing, it is crucial not only for securing the area, but also for maintaining the appropriate safety rules. The site should be thoroughly fenced so that people moving nearby exercise special caution. 

The second issue is even more important. Securing and stabilizing the ground is intended to increase its load-bearing capacity and enable safe work within the plot area. 

Securing the construction site area — key reasons

Why is it the investor’s responsibility to secure and stabilize the ground on which construction work is carried out?

  1. A secured site meets the requirements of health and safety at work. Soaked ground poses a risk to workers’ health and lives and can also lead to damage to construction equipment and its loss. That’s why securing the construction site applies both to the surfaces on which vehicles move and to excavations — e.g., using sheet piling, shoring piles, and other solutions.
  2. Protection of neighboring buildings and infrastructure. With protective measures in place, the risk of neighboring buildings settling and being damaged decreases. Such damage could occur due to weather factors, possible ground movements, and local loads.
  3. People’s safety. Proper preparation for earthworks minimizes the risk of accidents related to soil collapse, excavation flooding, or sudden ground settlement. A safe, stabilized ground also means a lower risk of accidents and injuries while the construction crew is working. 
  4. More efficient work. With appropriate site protection, it is easier to manage logistics. Ground stabilization supports vehicle access, enables the storage of construction materials with very high weight, and makes it possible to carry out work using heavy and specialized construction equipment. 
  5. Compliance with applicable law. Building regulations clearly state that the safety of workers and equipment is key at every stage of construction. That’s why stabilizing and fencing the site, as well as securing excavations, is backed by the risk of penalties being imposed during an inspector’s checks. 

Securing the construction site — fencing and construction solutions 

Fencing off the construction site to keep unauthorized people out is the foundation. In addition, solutions are used to protect the ground from soaking and collapsing. These include:

  • steel and wooden piles,
  • watertight sheet piling walls,
  • sheet piles (grodzice),
  • geotextiles and geogrids,
  • ground anchors,
  • drainage and dewatering systems.

In addition, surface-stabilizing materials are also used, such as concrete, wooden, or steel slabs. Typically, they are equipped with special fasteners that allow them to be laid in a way that best matches the size and shape of the plot, as well as its logistics characteristics. 

Furthermore, the investment area is protected by special fencing, warning systems, and also cameras that enable monitoring of the construction site. 

Why do investors, during earthworks, choose road plates?

Besides the obligation to mark the construction site and to train workers in safety, the contractor together with the investor is also required to protect health and life by stabilizing the construction site. For this purpose, among other things, road plates are used, which:

  • reduce dusting,
  • increase the subsoil’s load-bearing capacity,
  • increase the durability of temporary roads,
  • ensure compliance with regulations,
  • are available in different variants (not only concrete),
  • are modular, which provides flexibility in installation.

Solid ground stabilization, fencing, and monitoring are solutions that make ground protection on a construction site much easier. For ground stabilization, road plates are usually the best choice — they are stable, durable, and reliable.
