Metrum road plates as a key terrain protection for transformer station transport
Temporary road? Not only! This time, instead of constructing an almost 2-kilometer access road, we supplied Metrum5XL road plates to secure key sections of the route and a 100-ton crawler crane, which enabled precise and safe movement of heavy elements. As a result, the transport and installation of two transformer stations, including the heaviest module weighing 28 tons, were carried out without disruptions and without the risk of ground damage.
An additional ally on the day of execution was the improvement in weather – the first rays of sunshine illuminated the successful transport operation.
Logistical challenges and the need for Metrum road plates
The area where the project was carried out was characterized by difficult ground conditions, which posed a challenge for the transport and installation of transformer stations. The main problems that needed to be solved included:
- Lack of a full access road – it was necessary to secure only the most problematic sections of the route instead of building a full temporary road.
- Securing the terrain for heavy equipment – the delivery and installation of transformers required the use of a 100-ton crawler crane, which needed a stable surface.
- Protecting the ground from damage – waterlogged sections of the terrain could degrade under intense transport load and crane operation.
- Safe passage for heavy transport – the plates had to provide sufficient load-bearing capacity to support transport vehicles and the crane without causing excessive surface settlement.
All these challenges were resolved by using Metrum5XL road plates, which are a thicker, 20-centimeter version of standard Metrum plates, characterized by increased resistance to pressure and dynamic loads.
Wooden Metrum road plates
The application of Metrum5XL road plates in this project allowed for the effective protection of the most critical sections of the transport route and the creation of a stable base for the crane.
Key advantages of Metrum plates in this project:
- increased load-bearing capacity, thanks to a thickness of 20 cm, allowing for the passage of heavy transport,
- flexible adaptation to difficult terrain conditions, which avoided the need to build a full temporary road,
- effective ground protection from damage, by evenly distributing pressure,
- possibility of quick assembly and disassembly, which allowed for efficient project execution in a short time.

Project outcomes – what benefits did the use of Metrum road plates provide?
Thanks to the appropriate selection of technology, it was possible to:
- ensure safe access to the transformer station installation site,
- avoid the need to build a full temporary road, which reduced implementation costs,
- create a stable base for the 100-ton crawler crane, enabling its safe operation,
- minimize the risk of ground and infrastructure damage,
- complete the transport and installation of transformers without delays.
Summary – why is it worth renting road plates for terrain protection?
Renting road plates is a solution that allows infrastructure to be flexibly adapted to terrain conditions and the specifics of the investment. In the case of this project, the use of Metrum5XL plates allowed for safe access to the construction site, surface protection, and the creation of a stable platform for heavy equipment.
