Rental of Road Plates for ORP Sokół Transport – Securing Urban Infrastructure in Gdynia
Transporting a submarine is a large-scale logistical operation that requires not only specialized equipment but also proper surface protection. This time, we were chosen to provide road infrastructure for the transport of ORP Sokół from Nabrzeże Pomorskie to the Maritime Museum in Gdynia.
This task required the use of various types of rental road plates to enable the passage of heavy equipment and protect urban surfaces from damage. In the days leading up to the transport, we delivered and installed almost 4500 m² of plates, including:
- aluminum plates – used in sections with underground installations,
- steel plates – securing the most heavily loaded parts of the route,
- Metrum wooden road plates – providing flexibility and ground protection,
- Flex Deck plates – facilitating passage on more unstable sections.
The transport of a vessel weighing over 400 tons, using self-propelled modular transporters (SPMT), had to be carried out with utmost precision. The entire operation, despite adverse weather conditions, was successfully completed in just a few days.
Logistical Challenges and the Need for Rental Road Plates
The operation to move ORP Sokół involved many challenges, both in terms of logistics and urban infrastructure protection. The key issues that needed to be addressed included:
- Protection of urban surfaces – the transport route passed through Aleja Lipowa and other areas of Gdynia, where the heavy load could cause damage to asphalt and sidewalks.
- Safety of underground installations – in the Aleja Lipowa area, there were heating pipelines that needed to be properly secured from excessive pressure.
- Providing a stable surface – the transport took place in adverse weather conditions, increasing the risk of slipping and settling of heavy equipment.
- Quick execution – due to media and public interest, the operation needed to proceed smoothly and without unnecessary delays.
Thanks to the use of appropriate rental road plates, the route was effectively secured, ensuring smooth transport.
Aluminum Plates Alu Deck HD
On sections of the route where there were underground installations, we used Alu Deck aluminum plates. Their lightweight but durable construction allowed for even pressure distribution and protection of heating pipelines.
Key advantages of Alu Deck plates in this project:
- reduction of pressure on the ground, avoiding damage to pipelines,
- high load capacity with relatively low weight, facilitating assembly and transport,
- resistance to adverse weather conditions, which was crucial during the operation,
- anti-slip surface, ensuring stability for SPMT vehicles.
Steel Plates
In areas most exposed to heavy loads, steel plates were used, allowing for safe passage of transport weighing over 400 tons.
Their key advantages include:
- exceptional resistance to dynamic and static pressure,
- ground stabilization on the most demanding sections,
- effective protection of the surface from cracking and deformation.
Metrum Wooden Road Plates
In areas requiring flexible ground protection, we used Metrum wooden road plates. Their use allowed for:
- effective protection of urban surfaces from abrasion and point pressure,
- quick assembly and easy adaptation to changing conditions,
- reducing the risk of ground damage due to the movement of transport platforms.
Plastic Road Plates Flex Deck
On certain sections, Flex Deck plates were also used, which proved particularly effective in areas with more unstable ground.
Their advantages include:
- high resistance to weather conditions,
- quick assembly and ease of transport,
- good anti-slip properties, which were crucial during transport in difficult weather conditions.
