Storage of large goods at the sea port in Gdańsk – stable ground thanks to road plates
Transport and storage of large goods in sea ports requires appropriate infrastructure to ensure the stability and safety of stored cargo. At the sea port in Gdańsk, there was a need to create a temporary storage area for massive generators before their loading onto a ship.
Due to the weight of one generator being up to 131,000 kg and the limited pressure area of only 0.232 m², it was necessary to use rental road plates that can withstand such extreme loads. In this project, wooden Metrum road plates and Metrum1XL plates were used, creating a solid and evenly distributed ground, preventing ground damage and ensuring the safe storage of generators.
Logistical challenges in storing generators at the sea port
Storing and transporting heavy components in ports requires precise planning and proper preparation of the storage surface. In this project, key challenges included:
- Extreme point load – the large mass with very small contact area risked ground collapse.
- Protection of port surface – the standard ground could not withstand such large loads without additional protection.
